Betty Howard Scholarship

Elizabeth (Betty) Howard, BSN, RN, CDE was an active member of AADE, serving as an officer of the local chapter as secretary from 1995-1997, president-elect in 2003, and president from 2004-2005.  Her experience as a CDE for 25 years was at Sisters Hospital and in later years, establishing   her own diabetes education practice.  In that capacity, she provided education in her home and doctors’ offices.  In addition, she worked for various pharmaceutical companies, educating patients on diabetes self-management and injectable medications.

Betty was passionate about nursing and the importance of diabetes education.  She was helpful and supportive to new educators, inspiring several to work toward certification.

She believed that each and every healthcare encounter was an opportunity for the practitioner to provide diabetes self-management instruction.  Betty believed that CDE’s were needed to provide quality in-service programs for other healthcare providers.  Her philosophy was that all people with diabetes should be seen by a CDE.

It is in this spirit, that WNYADE is proud to award each year, a scholarship to a member who has successfully passed the CDE exam for the first time.
